About

Welcome!

My name is Sarah Milan.  I am truly excited and passionate about our homeschooling journey, and I hope to share with and learn from all of you.  Here is a little about myself to help you get to know me and understand why my family and I chose homeschooling:

Me in a Nutshell:

I am thankful to have spent the past seven years married to my best friend.    We have three children 4 yrs. and younger, which means that there is never a dull moment in our house! Aside from my family, my loves include anything that gets me on the water, reading my Bible, reading in general, and writing.

Training:
I have worked with kids since I was a pre-teen.  I started with babysitting and moved into tutoring and taking education classes during high school.  I studied elementary education in college and graduated from Concordia University in Ann Arbor, MI.  I recently completed my Master's in Teacher Leadership.  I was a classroom teacher for three years, two in fifth grade and one in fourth grade, but have worked with all ages from infant to high school in various capacities.

Now that we've made the leap to homeschooling, I am thrilled to put my formal teaching experiences to use in my own home and to hopefully encourage others who are already homeschooling, who are considering homeschooling, or who want to enrich the time they have with their kids before sending them to school.

Behind the Name:
The name "Homeschooling the Whole Child" reveals the overarching goals and purpose of our homeschooling journey.  We value every aspect of a child's education from developing character and a relationship with God to the core subject areas that make up a traditional classroom experience, and everything in between.  Art, Music, P.E., the Bible, and other things that are typically treated as "extras" or "specials" are given the same level of attention in our home since they are just as, if not more, essential to the healthy development of a child as Math and Reading.

Things to Remember:
1.   I realize that everyone will be approaching homeschooling and parenting with a different set of background experiences and belief systems.  Each family has different dynamics.  I hope that everyone will be able to take something from the posts and adapt the ideas to suit their own needs and families.

2.  Learning is a life-long adventure, and I do not claim to know everything about raising and educating children.  I am happy to share what I have learned in an effort to save somebody else time and trouble, and I look forward to gaining new information from other readers.

3. While I try to use pictures that are pleasing to look at, please remember that I am no superhero.  For every room that gets cleaned and beautiful picture that gets taken, the kiddos have already destroyed the next room and the paperwork is piling up! (see pictures below)  My hope is that the pictures will encourage a little creativity rather than cause any "Pinterest" guilt.

Our Office/Schoolroom/Playroom/Changing Station before "Spring" Cleaning... scary!

WooHoo!! A clean kitchen!
